Favorite Book: “The Giver” by Lois Lowry
Favorite Movie: The Internship
Favorite Quote: “It’s not about what you know, it’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows what you can do.” – Michael Robertson, TAG-Ed
Role Model: My role model is my wonderful mother! I can think of no one better to aspire to be like!
My TAG-Ed experience: During my time at TAG Ed (2011-12), I interned at a company called Radiant Systems as a Web Developer/Social Media “Guru”. My duties varied from graphic design, to web design, to social media marketing (creating ads + contests, attracting and interacting with new users) for Radiant Systems’ “MyFavEats” campaign.
What I’m doing now: I am the Founder of TechniGal LA, a non-profit dedicated to influencing young girls to make their mark in STEM, by exposing and introducing them to all the possibilities of the tech world/industry here in Los Angeles. I have also joined Make School (an awesome startup based in San Francisco) as an iOS Instructor for their Summer Academy program, where I will be teaching students of all ages Apple’s latest programming language, Swift, in which they will be utilizing to build and publish their own iOS applications into the App Store at the end of the summer. I am also currently working on a STEM themed music project called “The Coderitis Project”. This is a music project (EP) dedicated to the world of tech, and will shed light on what it’s like to be involved in it. The leading song “Coderitis” is now available on Soundcloud and Spotify! Check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/gernieb/coderitis
Future Plans: I plan to continue prospering in the tech industry; teaching, mentoring, and organizing hackathons, expand the reach of TechniGal, and promoting diversity and versatility in the tech world with projects such as “The Coderitis Project”, engaging youth all over the world to try their hand at technology in whichever way the see fit! My TAG internship influenced my whole outlook on technology as a whole! It was during my internship that I decided that I wanted to major in Computer Science and ultimately become a mobile applications developer.
Work/Volunteer experiences shaped by my internship: All of my career experiences have been shaped by TAG-Ed! The reason I mentor at hackathons is because I want more students to become as equipped in STEM related practices. TAG-Ed did that for me! I started TechniGal LA because I want young girls to become more aware of all that the tech industry has to offer. TAG-Ed did that for me!
